A PETITION TO PREVENT THE USE OF THE WORD SQUAW
AS A GEOGRAPHIC DESIGNATION IN THE STATE OF WISCONSIN.

Doesnt the word squaw Have its origins in Indian Languages?

Yes, it does. In Mohawk (an Iroquois language) the word otsiskwa refers to female genetalia. In eastern Algonquin languages skwa means woman and is the root of many words. The word SQUAW has been abused until its common usage is offensive to Indian people from many different tribes. Recently the state of South Dakota changed the geographical designation of Squaw Hump table, the site of a rape.

Send finished forms to:

The word squaw is deemed derogatory and offensive by many indigenous people in Wisconsin and throughout the United States. We, the undersigned, urge those in positions of legal authority to assist in the eradication of the word squaw as it is currently used to name lakes, streams, rivers, and other places or geographical features. We ask that legislation similar to that passed in Minnesota, Montana, Maine, Massachusetts and Oklahoma and proposed in South Dakota be enacted in Wisconsin.
